Economic Development The Monroeville area has experienced much success in recent years, with a variety of new developments and upgrades to longtime regional staples helping to keep the area thriving.

The Monroeville Mall continues to thrive, with a variety of retail and food establishments. A new 2,200-seat, 12-screen movie theater set to open in late 2013. The mall has 1.4 million square feet of space, including a 2005 redevelopment that featured the construction of “The District” portion of the property.

UPMC East opened its doors in July 2012 on the site of the former Palace Inn. The $250 million, 156-bed facility employs more than 650 people and has nearly 600 physicians on staff.

Cozza Enterprises, headed by Craig Cozza, has brought its success to the eastern suburbs with several redevelopment properties over the past six years. After purchasing and reselling the former Palace Inn property, Cozza built four stores on the former BP site in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center. Cozza Enterprises also is responsible for improvements to the former Electra Lighting location along William Penn Highway and the former Roth Carpet on Monroeville Boulevard.

Monroeville is home to nearly 2,000 businesses, with more than 100 restaurants and 9 hotels, according to statistics from Visit Monroeville.
